The General rode off after he assured me that he would soon send news of our Uncle. The General caught me with his eyes, “Son, if Captain Carter is dead, then entire South would be in mourning”. The General seemed suddenly anxious that this point.” I spoke up, “I am sorry General, but we have had no word from my Uncle since Christmas of 1864.” Carter been killed in the line of Duty, I would most certainly have been informed. Carter’s career with great interest and it’s inconceivable that no one would have brought me news of his death. Carter who personally related to me the last hours of Gen. I suddenly recognized the elegant gentleman, Gen. Carter was my father’s only known relation. We have never heard any word from our father’s people.
